There is no worse feeling in the world than to open your pocket PC and finding its memory has blanked out. All the work you have done, all the contact information you have accumulated over the months has suddenly vanished and rebuilding it will take forever, if it’s even possible to recoup some of the lost data.
If you have taken the proper steps on a regular basis, and synchronized your pocket PC with you computer, then recovering all that information should be a simple matter of hooking them up for an information exchange, allowing the computer to upload all the information from the computer into the memory of the pocket PC.
With many pocket PCs there is a time limit on how long it can go without synchronization before the system resets itself and you are left out of the loop. Additionally, you never know when the pocket PC’s battery might fail, shutting off the unit or it freezes due to some unexpected glitch in the system and you have to hit the reset button. In either case, any information stored on the unit’s internal memory will be lost forever.
With many pocket PCs, the battery is recharged while it sits on the synchronization cradle. You can keep it charged by placing it on the cradle on a daily basis, although most batteries will last several days without being recharged, depending on the amount of use it gets. It is a good habit to get into when you get home at night to place the unit in the cradle and then hit the sync button.
By doing this habitually, the battery will remain fully charged and the unit will synchronize with the corresponding program on your computer to keep all the information updated. In event of a failure of the handheld’s memory, the information is also stored on your computer.
Conversely, strikes by lightning, power surges and uncontrollable children and viruses have been known to clean the memory out of a home computer in seconds. By insuring the information on your pocket PC is backed up regularly, you can easily transfer the data back onto your home of office computer if becomes lost or compromised.
With most systems, the pocket PC comes with software to install on your computer that enables anything you do on the home computer to be synchronized to the pocket PC and vice versa. In some case users use Microsoft Outlook for contact information and scheduling.
With the installation of ActiveSync on the computer, and your pocket PC all information from Outlook can be readily synchronized with the handheld. However, it will take human interaction to make the synchronization happen and that is one way of making sure no data is lost on your pocket PC.
