You have Microsoft Outlook installed on your home or office computer and you just bought a new pocket PC. It can be a time consuming process transferring all of your information between the two devices, especially if it changes frequently, and entering the new and deleting the old information creates double work. That extra work was supposed to be eliminated with computerization of your scheduling and contact information and it can be once you learn how to synchronize your pocket PC with Outlook.
In order to do this you must first create a partnership between your computer and the pocket PC. Obviously you will have to have Microsoft Outlook installed on your computer and you will also need Microsoft’s ActiveSync installed as well. Once these are installed and running you can synchronize the information through a cable, a cradle or through an infrared device.
To create a new partnership start ActiveSync on your computer and in the wizard select standard partnership. Then select synchronize with server or this desktop and then enter the requested information such as the server name, user name and password and the domain. Tell it what types of information you will want to exchange. You will also have the option of deleting or replacing items on your pocket PC, remembering that if you choose to keep the items on the pocket PC you could end up with several duplicate items.
Once you select finish in ActiveSync your pocket PC may beep for attention. You will probably have to enter your password, but you will also be given the option of allowing the pocket PC to remember the password. Understand that choosing this option may allow others to access the information in Outlook. Wait until the pocket PC has been synchronized before disconnecting it from the computer.
If synchronizing Outlook items gives you trouble, open ActiveSync on the handheld unit and go to PC tools and then options. On the server tab, select advanced and change logging to brief.
While you cannot synchronize any http email accounts to your pocket PC, you can use it to browse http email in Microsoft Pocket Internet Explorer on your pocket PC. If you are using a POP3 email account in the new partnership wizard, part of the Microsoft pocket Outlook, allows you to choose to synchronize with the inbox of the POP3 account.
If you already have a partnership, you can add a new one by opening ActiveSync on your desktop and under options, got to sever and choose to enable synchronization with a server and then click configure. To change the server information, under server connection, choose connection. Then click on OK until you are back to the beginning of the program.
